Last night was the third evening we (CompassionSC) went down to the Rebele Family Shelter here in SC to facilitate a non-denominational service for the families. We call it a service. It is really a small group of sorts. All of us in need of grace. All of us with some type of brokenness. It’s the sixth week we’ve been privileged to participate with the families in this way. It’s been amazing seeing how God has been at work in the lives of those who have attended, both in our lives and in the lives of the families who come down stairs. Continue Reading »

As I was growing up my dad often said, “If you end up with two or three good friends in your lifetime your lucky.” The first time I recall him saying it was when I was maybe nine or ten years old. I thought it was silly. I had hundreds of friends. All of my classmates. Heck…all the kids on the playground at Vine Hill Elementary School. When I got older I understood. Continue Reading »

Trials

Have you ever had poison oak? Have you ever had it in a place on your body where the sun doesn’t shine? (unless you sunbathe naked). Well, our oldest daughter Tate just had it in that spot and down the inside of her leg. Needless to say it has been one of the most challenging times for Derek and I as parents. Let me explain. Stretched

Things have been busy for the Dominguez clan. I’m stretched in ways I never would have thought. I feel so inadequate to be embarking on the journey we are involved in. I suppose this is a good thing. God has been so graceful in reminding me who I am and what my identity needs to be truly grounded in, my Belovedness as his son. I often still feel the pull to be someone I’m not in trying to make this new organization “go.” Every day I hear his still quite voice in subtle ways telling me I can’t, but he can. It’s very basic, but at least functional. Along with writing support letters, networking with churches, meeting with various parties interested in partnering with CompassionSC, developing infrastructure, I’ve also got a chance to throw up a basic web site explaining CompassionSC. There is a ton of “window dressing” that needs to take place as well as more content provided, but it’s up. In the months to come it will continually be morphing.

Every human is being formed into someone. We are all continually being shaped and undergoing some type of transformation. A follower of Jesus has embarked on a journey to participate in a particular way of transformation. This process of spiritual formation looks to Jesus as its authority and to his way of existing as the means to the “good life,” the abundant life God offers to us. A follower of Jesus therefore takes spiritual formation seriously and desires to participate in the “redemptive process” of having their inner being take on the character of Christ himself. As someone on going participates in this process of inner formation, their exterior life naturally flows from the interior. In the previous post in this series, I quoted Dallas Willard’s definition in full where he defines Christian Spiritual Formation. Continue Reading »

Monday was my last official day at High St. Community Church as the pastor to college students and young adults. We are officially now living in the midst of “next things.” I still temporarily have office space at HSCC and a land line but it’s to support CompassionSC (Santa Cruz), the new organization we are starting. CompassionSC is going to be an on going work in progress and will continually undergo refinement in its early stages. For now we are describing CompassionSC as, “A movement to unite and mobilize the collective church in SC County to be a compelling force of Christ’s compassionate love in aciton among the poor and disadvantaged.” Continue Reading »
